NOTE: Three of Timmons and Mary Catherine (Urban) Literal's children would marry grandchildren of Thomas Marion Smith. These and other grandchildren of Thomas and the children of Timmons and Mary would constitute much of the activities in and around the community.

Thomas Marion Smith Smith n Love 89338~3

Eliza (Margaret Eliza) would marry Thomas Marion Smith from North Carolina. Their children would form marriage alliances with the Ayers, Ellis, Urban, and Belew families that would establish these families and neighbors as a foundation for the Bluesprings/Fairview Community on the banks of Bluewater Creek. Their grandchildren would fortify these alliances through their marriages to the Literal family.

Thomas and Eliza are living in District 1 on the 1860 Census and on the 1870 Census they are in District 2. Judging by their neighbors (Sandy, Belew, and Urban) they appear to be in the Bluesprings/Fairview area. On the 1910 Census, they are in the same area, living with their daughter and son in law, Robert and Lou Ayers. Thomas and Eliza would die within two years at the age of 82 and 78, respectively. They had a total of eleven children, six of them preceded them in death.

Margaret Eliza Love (FTJ#106) 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

Margaret Eliza Love was born September 18, 1834 in Ireland, Tyrone, and died November 27, 1912 in TN., Lawrence Co., Loretto. She married Thomas Marion Smith(#107) August 21, 1851 in Lauderdale Co., AL. He was born July 24, 1829 in South Carolina, and died June 09, 1911 in TN., Lawrence Co., Loretto. Margaret Eliza Love is buried: TN., Lawrence Co., Loretto, Glenrock Cemetery.

Thomas Marion Smith is buried: TN., Lawrence Co., Loretto, Glenrock Cemetery.

We know from their responses on the Census of 1910 that Thomas and Eliza had a total of 11 children, five of whom were still alive. We know that William E. died in 1897, and we assume that one of the children that were deceased was James M. Smith,8 b.1858. We base this on his absence from the 1870 Census when he was 12. We also know that the third child of Thomas and Eliza was born and died in May/June of 1860. The 1860 Census for Lawrence County was started in September and the Enumerators (Census Takers) were supposed to record the occupants of the household on June 1st of that year, Thomas and Eliza listed themselves, William E., James M., and “Infant” age 1/12. The Infant could not have been born before than the 1st of May and did not live long enough for them to name it, thus the name listed being “Infant”. This would suggest that the child only lived a few days and was either born on the 1st of June or the last few days of May.

This accounts for three of the deceased six offspring, we know that Isabela, Lunette, Martha, and Tensia lived passed 1910 based on the picture we have of the four sisters. This accounts for a total of 7 of the total 11 children born to Thomas and Eliza. Two of the remaining four children would be Mariah and Mary Agnes. I do not have death dates on Mariah or Mary Agnes but only one of them could be one of the deceased offspring listed in 1910, because if they were both deceased by 1910 that would leave an unnamed adult unaccounted for. From this we conclude that William E., James M., “Infant”, two unidentified children, and either Mariah or Mary Agnes were deceased; the children who lived past 1910 were Isabela, Lunette, Martha, Tensia and either Mariah or Mary Agnes.
