Veteran Day Dedications: 2019

Veterans Memorial – East Prairie Missouri
As is our annual tradition we will be posting dedications honoring our family's veterans by recognizing their service. Beginning today, and continuing through mid-November, we will post at least one article a day commemorating a family member who served in the military whether in war or times of peace. We will post more than one a day on many days. Feel free to post your own service pictures, letters and memorials, here in the Littrell Family [Facebook] Group page.
  • To view these daily post go to the family’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/littrellfamily.net/) or to view the post directly use the Table of Contents (in the right-hand column) and make your selections in the “Military Roll Call Section”.
These commemorations will be based on, but not limited to, the 35 family Veterans commemorated in the book “The Littrell Family Journals Volume III: Military Roll Call”.
The Veteran dedications will be listed in groups by the era in which they served.
If you have information on a family Veteran who is not mentioned in the book, or additional information please provide that information (pictures, stories, newspaper clipping, memorials, etc.,) to me at the reunion, or via the email or postal address below
Please, the commemorations we are talking about are not just for blood-line descendants... they can include spouses too.

2017 Veterans Day DISCOUNTS!!!

Tips Before Heading Out

  • graphicReview the official site information and rules before heading out.  Many websites are listing previous years promotions that are no longer valid.
  • Be sure to bring proof of military service, uniform photo or be in uniform.  Proof of military service varies by company.  See the list of states now offering a Veterans designation on a driver’s license.
  • Pay attention to the dates on the Veterans Day offer as some offers are for days to other than Veterans Day or extended over several days.
  • Most of the restaurant free meals are for dine in only.
  • Verify that you’re eligible for the offer.
  • You should tip your server.  They’re working hard to serve you and depend on the income. We recommend tipping on the actual cost of the meal.
  • Many of these promotions include small print that says participating locations only.  Unfortunately individual franchisees may choose not to participate.  Fortunately, some franchisee’s participate even if the corporate company does not.
  • Call ahead if you’re unsure about anything.
  • Thank you for your service!

Keep an eye out for other offers (do a GOOGLE search). I find what I can, but I’m sure I miss many. Some places don’t announce until the last minute and I can’t find local offers for the various locations of those who follow this site.

NOTE: Some offer’s are for a day, some for days, and some for the month or more. Some occur before Veterans Day, some on Veterans day, and some after Veterans Day. The list groups them  beginning with November 10th and ends with the listings for November and after. Any offers that start before November 10th are not listed unless they continue past Veterans Day. So scan the whole list. Its long!      GlennDL 2017

Friday, 11 November 2016
12:00 Noon Dedication
Veterans Memorial
200 EAST WASHINGTON
Luncheon following
at Boomland on I-57
outside of Charleston, Missouri

We will be holding the informal ceremony this Veterans Day (November 11th) at the Veterans Memorial in East Prairie.
Chief Master Sergeant Wallace 'Wally' Littrell, Retired, will say some words and lead us in prayer, which will be followed by an opportunity for photographs.
We will then proceed to 'Boomland" for the Family Luncheon.
The family veterans being recognized with a brick are:
  • Red Littrell -Army WWII
  • Jessie Davis -Navy WWII
  • OJ Littrell -Army WWII
  • Les Littrell -Army
  • JD Littrell -Navy/Army WWII/Korea
  • Bordie Thurman -Army WWII
  • Rubin Littrell -Army Korea
  • Bill Davis -Navy
  • Troy Littrell Army Vietnam
  • JL Littrell -Navy Vietnam
  • Glenn Littrell -Army
  • Blaine Davis -Navy
  • Wallace Littrell -Air Force Retired
  • Tim Littrell –Navy
  • Angeka Pfaff – Air Force Retired
  • Jeff Littrell – Air Force Retired
We encourage all descendants of John and Kizzie to attend the ceromony and luncheon. We will have the book "Military Role Call: The Littrell Family of Mississippi County, Missouri" available for review at the luncheon.*
After the last Littrell Family Luncheon we posted information about the Veteran's Memorial in East Prairie  Missouri. It was decided that we would facilitate the purchase of a brick for our families Veterans, descendants of John and Kizzie of East Prairie. We posted this information on June 9th with the plan being that we would have a dedication followed by another family lunch on Veterans Day this year.
We encourage any one who is descended from John & Kizzie who missed this opportunity to purchase a brick for their Veteran to still do so. It may be too late for this dedication but it isn't to late to do it. Be sure to let it be known that you wish the brick to be placed with the Littrell family bricks.
*The book list the Military Service of 35 descendants of John and Kizzie who have served in the military as well as ancestors of John and Kizzie that served since before the Revolutionary War.
We ask that anyone who has a copy of the book to bring it for viewing.

Glenn’s 8th Annual I.W. Picnic:

TO ALL MY LITTRELL FAMILY COUSINS WHO MIGHT FIND THEMSELVES ON THE ROAD AND IN THE VICINITY OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA THIS SUNDAY.

I would like to extend an open invitation to you and your traveling companions to take a rest stop and drop in on my Annual Independence Weekend Picnic. Come as you are, don't worry about bringing anything... just take a break, relax, and stretch your legs. We'll have plenty of food, activities, and shady trees to take a nap under.

For information  go to the Picnics website:  http://iwpicnic.blogspot.com/

IWPflagbanner thin

I.W. Picnic= Independence Weekend Picnic:
Why isn’t the Independence Weekend Picnic on Independence Day Weekend? In keeping with our tradition of holding the picnic on Sunday, but NOT on the actual 4th of July, this year picnic is on the following weekend. We do this to avoid conflicting with other more longstanding family traditions that usually cause scheduling conflicts.

Thursday, June 9, 2016

ATTENTION LITTRELL FAMILY VETERANS:

At last weekends family luncheon we discussed the East Prairie Veterans Memorial. As stated in a Memorial Day post (click to view) there are family members that should be eligible for inclusion on the memorial and that there presently were no family members represented.

Since then we learned that two family members, Jesse and Billy Davis are now represented on the memorial with their own bricks. (see picture below), and Blaine Davis will soon also be represented.

We discussed what the criteria was and how we might go about getting other family member on the memorial. The criteria for obtaining bricks for family members is a $30 fee and information on their service.

Our plan is to collect $30 (as well as donations) from family members who wish for their Veteran's to be represented on the memorial. Based on the family members represented in the family history book “Military Roll Call, The Littrell Family Of Mississippi County, Missouri”, we have listed known veterans below. If you would like to have your Veteran included on the Memorial then send $30 (check or postal money order) to:

Book Project UPDATE: Volume II / Volume I

update: 8-21-2015

As some may have noted from the increased number of articles on our European ancestors, the emphasis has shifted from Volume 2 stories to Volume 1 stories. The reason is that the size of the Volume 2 work has made it apparent that I could not finish the book in time for the October reunion.

Cover V1As a consequence I have retargeted Volume 1 as the book most likely to be ready in time for the reunion. One positive effect of this change is that it will give everyone a chance to update their family information so you are included in Volume 2 (new target date= before next years reunion). Send me your family information, including your line of descent as far back as you know it. names, dates, pictures, stories, etc.

…In preparing the first draft for the next book(s) we have found it necessary to address some old unresolved mysteries. Some of these mysteries have been as much as 20 years old. There is a lot more information (good and bad) available on the internet that use to require a visit to some small county library in “Poduck”, Kentucky or somewhere. This has led to some mysteries solved, new information discovered, and even some new mysteries created.

We’ve already posted two mysteries that have been resolved:

There is more, but we don’t want to delay work on the books so we will post them as we process them into the books first draft. We ask you to be patient, but just to aggravate you, here are some teasers:

  • In the past we have pointed out that Grandma Kizzie had the distinction of having ancestors on both sides during the civil war. While we are still trying to verify this we have discovered that Grandpa John also has that distinction. We knew his grandfather, Eli Literal, served and died during the war, serving with the 9th Tennessee Cavalry(CSA). Well, now we know his grandfather on his mother’s side, Cassandra Urban, and Cassandra’s father-in-law, Stith Landtroop (John’s great-grandfather) served together in the 1st Alabama Cavalry(Union). The 9th Tennessee and the 1st Alabama may have even faced off against each other.
  • We’ve discovered a possible additional generation on Grandpa John’s ancestors(Landtroop). We presently discovered an unconfirmed father for Stith Landtroop, John Lanthrop. If this can be confirmed we may also have our second Veteran from the war of 1812.
  • We’ve well documented the service of Grandma Kizzie’s Belew ancestors (Zachariah and Renney) in the Revolutionary War, and we’ve made mention of the marriage of Zachariah’s daughter to Daniel Comer, a neighbor of the Belews in South Carolina. Well it now turns out that Daniel Comer’s father Captain Daniel Comber actually served in the same regiment (2nd Spartan Regiment) as Susannah’s father Pvt. Zachariah Belew, and her grandfather Lieutenant Renney Belew.
  • We have also discovered a will for Daniel Comber of Union County, South Carolina. This the grandfather of Jesse Comer , of Lawrence County, Tennessee. In addition we may have identified his (Daniel Comber) father and grandfather.
