One of twenty-seven indentured servants, was delivered to the shores  by Captain Laurance Robinson who received payment [1350acres] for his cargo (the indentured servants) on 3-23-1671. James married Susannah and by the time of his death (1698) was "a land owner and Tobacco planter" with a sizable estate. By the time of Susannah's death in about 1707 John Tullous is appointed as guardian for John (still a minor). by the time Pres and Margaret were married her father was deceased so her Uncle R. B. Ayers served as Bondsman.

“.. in those Days they called him Press.. when I (Earline) was 10 years old (1929) he went to Loretto to get some medicine for the family who all had the Flu. He went in a buggy and had almost made it home when he had one of his seizure spells and fell out of the buggy into a mud-hole and could not breathe. By the time we got to him, he was dead.”

…within a week, Roy Smith had died followed by Timmons the next week.1 By 1930, Margaret and her remaining family are living next door to her brother Troy Sandy.

1 As told by Earline Littrell-Jones. According to JD Littrell the buggy that “Pres” was riding in arrived at the homestead without him, his wife Margaret immediately jumped into the wagon and whipped the horses back down the rode, she found him face down in inches of water.

James made plans to move the family and on the last day of 1929, he loaded his family of 8 children and headed for southeast Missouri in a T Model Car.
The family landed in New Madrid on the ferry. They moved up the levee from New Madrid for a while and then moved on a farm at LA Forge. James rented some ground from Charlie Rablis (?) where he farmed for a good while. Eventually he moved to New Madrid MO., where he had a gas station, and then they moved to Sikeston, Missouri.
James had a car wreck that caused him a lot of pain and prevented him from working.
James died in 1965 at the age of 85, Donie continued to live in Sikeston, Missouri.

1 James Carroll Littrell Family Correspondence File, (Letters, Family Group Sheets, and charts sent by family members to the compiler Glenn D. Littrell.), "Mrs. Donnie Littrell has 87th birthday" undated and unreferenced Newspaper clipping,, contributed by Bertha Littrell-Thurman

2 James Carroll Littrell Family Correspondence File, (Letters, Family Group Sheets, and charts sent by family members to the compiler Glenn D. Littrell.), According to her daughters, Donie's full name was : Donie Emaline Cal Lizzie Ezell Littrell. She was supposedly named after her aunts. To date two of her known aunts on her fathers side were Nancy and Ollie, and there was a "C.A." and a "T.S.A." Ezell who we are still clarifying the initials and finally a "T.C." or "T.H.C." who may have been an uncle or aunt[?]. Obviously from this group any of the "C" initials could be for Cal [short for ?]. If the Ezell aunts and uncles are complete then the Donie, Emaline, and Lizzie must have come from the Belew [mother] side of her ancestry. As yet she has no Aunts identified in that family.Besides the fact that all of her aunts have not been identified it is also possible that the reference to 'aunts' may mean or include 'Grand Aunts" or the Donie, Emaline, Cal, and Lizzie may not be the full or actual names her Aunts went by, for example Donie's first cousin [sister-in-law by marriage] was Kizzie Zore Comer Littrell who on one census showed up as "Lizzie" [but to our knowledge never went by that name, and it could very well be a misprint or misinterpretation.] But Kizzie or Lizzie does suggest that the name existed somewhere in the Ezell family line. GDL 10-25-99 According to the 1910 Census, Caldona, Cal or Donie could be a derivative of Caldona?.

…….MS ANNIE BELLE (SMITH) SPRINGER
Submitted by: Peggy Littrell

This week's Senior Spotlight of the week is Ms Annie Belle Springer.
Ms. Annie was born March 3, 1911 in Loretto, TN area to Benjamin & Susie (Littrell) Smith. She had two sisters, Nettie & Rosie. Five brothers, Roy, Archie, Wilson, James, and Frank. All are deceased, except Frank.
Her first memories were living at the Powell Place on Bluewater. Her father farmed for Allen Littrell. When she was about 10 years old they heard a noise in the distance. It was a car chugging up the road and pulled up in their yard next to the house. This was driven by Allen Littrell. This was first car she saw.
She remembers going to church at Mary's Chapel and Blue Springs. The church at Blue Springs was upon a hill above Uncle Bill & Aunt Tensie Belew place.
We then moved into her grandma Smith's house that was built out of logs. It was built high off the ground and goats slept under it at night.
Her Dad, Ben, bought some land from John Urban near by. He cut the lumber and built us a new three-room house. We now had a home of our own.
She started to school at Blue Springs, later called. Fairview School. This was a one-room school with all 8 grades being taught.
In the winter they had to sit close to a wood-burning stove. Their water came from a spring on Uncle Jim Urban's land. She remembers teachers, Mr. Martin, Lacy Gibbs, Jessie Copeland, and Vertie Yocum. She went through the 8th grade. It was too far for her to walk to Loretto to go to the high School.
With her large family that all had chores to do after school. All had to gather firewood for heating and cooking.
Frank SpringerHer mother taught her to piece quilts on a catalogue page, quilt, patch clothes, and knit. The children picked the seeds out of cotton, it was carded and her mother spun the cotton into thread for knitting. She learned to knit socks, all except the heel, her mother did that.
The women of the community would get 2 to 4 quilt. tops ready and meet in different homes for a "Quilting Bee". They would quilt all day. Someone cooked a big meal and all ate and went back to quilting.
Ms Annie met Frank Springer in church. They were married March 16, 1929 at St. Joseph, TN by Rev. Johnson. Frank's brother carried them to get married. When they returned Mr. & Mrs. Springer had a big wedding supper with a large crowd there to help celebrate.
They lived with Frank’s parents for a while and farmed to save enough money to buy all their furniture from cotton crops.
Their first child was a boy, Walton, born June 1, 1930. Then a daughter, Mary Rose, Aug. 28, 1936.AnnieBell DU1092001a
Then they moved into a rental house owned by Mr. White
They moved in a two-room house on Frank's parents place.
In 1942 Frank went to work for TVA where he worked for 33 years at his retirement. Ms. Annie's mother died that same year and they moved in with her father, Mr. Smith, to help him with the farm in Loretto.
In 1947 they bought the farm in Loretto located at the St Joseph, and Loretto city limit line near the railroad tracks. Her Dad and grandmother moved in with them. They lived there off and on for the rest of their lives.
Mr. Frank died in 1998 after suffering a stroke.  The had 69 years of marriage.
Ms. Annie still lives on the property they bought in 1947 with daughter Mary Rose Holt in a new house recently built. The old house was torn down. She was surprised when the Loretto Lioness Club gave her a house warming a few months ago.
She belonged to Home Demonstration Club and is now a member of the Loretto Lioness Club, Ladies Aux. She attends church at Mary's Chapel and enjoys going to Loretto Senior Citizens when she can. She loves and is loved by all people she comes in contact with.
She has a lot of company with family, friends, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews

FOLKS JUST CALL HER GRANNY
by Bob Moore [Grandson]
Staff Writer Lawrenceburg Democrat-Union
March 16, 1988

Nettie Berryhill is well known around parts of south Lawrence County. What people don't know is what Granny has encountered in her nearly 87 years of life. She's truly a remarkable and wonderful human.

Granny: as most folks know her, was born March 30, 1901 about 30 yards from where she has lived for the past 44 years. She has been the cornerstone of the Fairview Community ever since her husband; the late John Alvin Berryhill, sold a 41 Ford to build their house. They spent the entire sum of $1,100.

Times were hard for Granny from the time she was a child until she reached the golden years. She was one of nine children in which five are still living. Folks didn't have much at the turn of the century and Granny's family was not exception.

Her parents, Ben and Susie Littrell Smith farmed for a living. Since Granny was the oldest child after her brother died at an early age, she too had to farm. Still, her dad wanted the kids to have an education so Granny attended Blue Springs (across Blue Water Creek) and later St. Mary's in the Rascal Town Community. She still remembers such teachers as Mattie Bumpus and Victoria Yocom and J.T. Spain.

She wanted to attend teacher's school but the family just could not afford it. So, back to the farm she went until she met Alvin Berryhill. "I remember Alvin courting me in a horse and buggy," said Granny. "A short time later, my sister and I got married. I married Alvin and she married Villard Smith in a double wedding."

Things were going pretty well in the early 20's when Granny and Alvin were making about $4.00 per day cutting timber and chopping cotton. Then came the crash of '29. "We were already poor but the 'crash of '29' hurt everybody," said Granny. "Wages fell to 25 cents a day and if it wasn't for hogs, chickens, calves, catfish and corn bread, a lot of folks would never have made it through the hard times."

Granny and her sister lived in a two-room house with their husbands for several years; nearly up until the old ford built her present home.

Granny gave birth to five children. First born Lorene died in 1923 at age 11 months. Then came Waymon in 1925. He was killed in a car accident in 1964 after getting off work at Murray Ohio. Sylvia was born in 1927, Ellen in 1930 and Bonnie in 1934. Only Sylvia and Bonnie survive. In 1976, Alvin passed away after 54 years of marriage to Granny. "I think about him and others I've lost everyday," said Granny. "Those are things you can never forget."

Granny has done a variety of things in her lifetime. She has been a waitress, a bus driver, poured concrete, and a meat cutter, tended to the sick and was a cook for Sheriff Harold Brown during his term. She remembers the Murray Strike quite well. "Alvin and I were working at the jail when the strike began. It was a mess around there. I had to cook a lot of extra food for a couple of days."

Granny still enjoys her garden, going to the senior citizens club and writing gospel songs. She has had several published in Methodist songbooks. Knowing Granny, she'll take up another hobby before long.

She attends Freedom Congregational Methodist Church in Loretto. She has been a Christian all her life. "I'm getting old and rusty and I ain't much to look at, but God has left me here a long time for some reason," said Granny. "I still love the Lord as I always have and will until he calls me home."

The crash of '29, the days of horse and buggy, the $1,100 houses, the one-room schools and many other things are behind Granny. Now she can relax and watch her 19 great-grandchildren grow and enjoy life as it is meant to be.

She has been around for two passing's of Haley's Comet and the way she's going now, she may see it when it comes around again.ThoseGoldenYears~NLSB

Suzie Louisa Littrell & Richard Benjamin Smith lived on the Powell Place, on Bluewater, and farmed for Allen Littrell (Suzie’s 1st cousin). They then moved into Richard’s mothers’ house (Mary Malinda Powel Smith), that was built high of the ground and goats slept under it at night.

Richard then bought some nearby land from John Urban (?), cut lumber and built a three-room house.

The family got their water from a spring on Jim Urban's land.

The children went to school at Blue Springs (Fairview), a one-room schoolhouse with 8 Grades. All their chores had to be done after school.

After Suzie died in 1942, her daughter (Annie Belle Smith~Springer) and husband moved in with Richard and helped him farm the land. In 1947 when Annie Bell and Frank bought their own land, Richard and his mother moved in with them.6

Richard was a farmer and served as Constable and Susie was a mid-wife. 7
