Navigating LF.net: Overview

A “Page” is the current view of the website. (from one page to the next the only thing that changes is the articles on that page. The page header, footer, and sidebars are constant. All pages, including the 'front page', contain a limited number of articles.

ARTICLES/POST

Articles are sometimes referred to as 'post'.
Every article on this website starts with a Date Posted, followed by the article title, and followed by the articles “Index Labels”.All articles appear in chronological order with the newest article at the top of the page. Sometimes an article may be re-posted with a new posting date.
Every article ends with a 'sharing bar' which is the gray bar with the sharing icons and the “Comments” link.
Every article is assigned to at least one page. Some (most) articles are assigned to more than one page. Articles are assigned to different pages through the “Index Labels

INDEX LABELS

To view the page containing all the articles with the same “Index Labels” click on the appropriate Index Label under the title of the article.
To view pages from the “Table of Contents” click on the page title in each section. Next to each page title is a number enclosed in parenthesis. This number is the total number of articles assigned to that page title. Remember there may be more than one page assigned to that page title.

END OF PAGE

Remember, each page has a limit on how many articles can appear on that page. When you reach the bottom of a page use the “Older Post” link under the last article(ABOVE) to view/see if there are more articles. You can use the “Newer Post” and “Older Post” links to navigate back and forth between pages.

WWW.LITTRELLFAMILY.NET HAS A NEW BANNER!!!!!!

For 20 years the Littrell Family Newsletter banner has appeared on every newsletter, poster, book, program and website as the Logo for distributed family research items.
Littrell_Family_Album
Last week we moved that banner to the 'footer' section of the (non-facebook) website and today we placed a new banner at the top of the (non-facebook) website.
LFnBanner
The new banner is more suited for graphic displays like the website so the old banner will still be used for less graphic purposes such as print and some video presentations.
For now we will continue to rotate different banners for the “LittrellFamily.net on Facebook” site.

Cousins on FaceBook:

Reposted from 1-12-2009:

Since this was originally posted the number of Descendents of John & Kizzie on FaceBook has nearly tripled. We’re now creating a group page [with events] for the family on FaceBook as a way of sharing information with other FaceBook members.

We want to remind everyone that not all cousins are or will ever be on FaceBook. For that reason we encourage everyone to keep this website in mind as a way to also stay ‘connected’. Even though many of us use different apps on FaceBook to track and list our cousins many find these ‘apps’ to be to ‘busy’ to maintain. There are just so many versions and each with their own privacy issues for us all to get on the same one.

By using both www.littrellfamily.net and LittrellFamily.net group on FaceBook you won’t miss any information and we won’t miss you.

Want to know how to determine whether someone is a first or third cousins.  What does ‘once-removed’ mean?  You’d be surprised that most of us are wrong on ‘counting cousins’.  Click here to see how to properly count cousins. Warning it will make your head swim. If you have trouble with it you can always email me and I’ll figure it out. gdl@glenns-world.com just be sure to give me your parentage and as much of theirs as you can.

*To view FaceBook you have to register.  FaceBook is not for everyone.  To register just type www.facebook.com in the address bar.  Hopefully we can get more people using this website[littrellfamily.net] for communication but for some facebook is an alternative.

FaceBook Badges:  Want cousins on facebook to find you? You can create a facebook badge and put it on this site. just click here and follow the instructions. Then paste the code into an email and send it to me. [Scroll down this page and watch for other badges in the left-hand sidebar.

How to support littrellfamily.net [and the FaceBook group*]:

  • Join the FaceBook group. Goes active May 15, 2011. If you haven’t received an invite by that date then click my ‘Badge’ in the sidebar and message me from your FaceBook account.
  • Respond to all events even if your ‘not sure’
  • On this site, page, go down to the “NetworkedBlogs” box and “Follow This Blog”. By doing so any new post to this blog will automatically appear on your FaceBook feed/wall.
  • Also On this site, page, go down to the “Support LF.N” box and click “Follow”
  • Comment on FaceBook post and comment on articles here on this site.

*You can use the group to isolate your conversations with other members of group LittrellFamily.net by writing directly on the groups wall [same for photos, links, etc.]. When you write on your wall or profile everyone will see it, but when you write on the group wall only other members of the group see it. Same thing for events.

LittrellFamily.net on Facebook:

This is the portal to the FaceBook site for the Littrell Family. Primarily descendants of John & Kizzie (Comer) Littrell. Non-members can view the site and membership list but only members can post or view post. Feel free to post messages, videos and links. they will appear to group members only and not to the rest of your 'list'. Its a good way to keep your family discussions and post separate from your normal FaceBook activities. Non-members can request to join and members should be able to invite people to join, if not then provide the admin with the request via email.

LFn

Why its important to invite your family members to join this group page:
This family has a strong and colorful history, a history that belongs to every family unit whether it is just a single parent and a single child (Uncle Noble and Rex after the death of Corine) or a family as big as Grandpa John & Grandma Kizzie's (with 12 children), whether it is a family with step children (as when Uncle Jesse married the widow Simbeck (Aunt Viola)) or a family with half siblings (as when Uncle OJ remarried and had children by his second wife as well as his first). This family has a wide collection of diversity whether its nature is religious, political, racial, or national. This family has its closet skeletons and its righteous few. All in all there is a lot this family has that should be shared and passed on for many generations.
This group page and the non-facebook page (
www.littrellfamily.net ) are two of many tools we have to share and spread information about our heritage, past and present, but we all have to be sure to share that information with our family members to foster that heritage.
We now have 110 members in LittrellFamily.net on Facebook bridging 4 generations and spread out from New York to San Diego, from Florida to Colorado, but their is always room for more. Is everyone in your family that is on Facebook in the group? If not why not and what can anyone do about it? ANYONE can't! Only you can do something about it.
Non-members of this group page can see who's in the group, but they can't see what's posted on the group pages. They can see some photo's, but not all. They can't see the conversations. And most importantly, they can only receive invitations to join the group from someone on their 'Friends' List. If I know about them I can send them a link to the group, but if they're not on my friends list I can't send them an invitation to join, because I'm not on their friends list any facebook message I send them may not make it through their privacy settings.
Now I could send them a friend request and if they accept I could then send them an invitation to join the group, but what if they don't accept? Not every distant cousin is going to accept a friend request from a 61 year old cousin they never met. Even sounds a little creepy doesn't it? Besides I like to keep my friends list kind of small and the whole idea behind the family group page is to have a place for sharing with family without sharing EVERYTHING we post on Facebook.

About Littrell Family.net:

Littrell, Luttrell, Literal, Comer, Ezell, Urban, Landtroop, Hampton, Tennessee, Missouri, and reunions.

Its all here.

Welcome to the website for communicating the history [genealogical research] of the Littrell/Luttrell family and their allied families.

This is where I post information on the various family lines for the name Littrell, or Luttrell, or Literal, or any of the many varied spellings* of that name throughout history. I have researched the history of the Littrell, Luttrell and Literal family for over 15 years now and have written several books on the Littrell and Luttrell families of Europe, Colonial America, Tennessee and Missouri. I am presently writing and planning to write several more as well as re-editing the previous books. In addition to the Littrell and Luttrell histories I hope to write on the Comer, Urban, Smith, Ellis, Sandy and Ezell families of Colonial America and particularly Tennessee....gdl 2007

To get the most out of LittrellFamily.net and to understand how you can contribute click on the 'Making the Most of this Website.' link below.

Whenever referring to a specific Littrell/Luttrell or a specific branch I will use the accepted spelling for that branch, but when referring to Littrell/Luttrells in general I will use the ‘Littrell’ spelling.

Making the Most of This Website/Blog

Anyone can read this blog and anyone can leave comments on 'postings' by using the 'comments' link.  If your interested in 'posting' your own articles or pictures just send us an email and we will send you instructions.

When you first arrive at this website you are on the Main or Front page. Articles/post on the Front Page are constantly changing:

  • When an article is first ‘posted’ it appears at the top of the main page.
  • When new articles are posted the older articles move down the page, this results in all articles appearing in reverse chronological order from top to bottom.
  • As new articles are added the older articles near the bottom of the page disappear.  They disappear from the main page to keep it from being endlessly long.  How many articles appear on the main page is controlled by the website editor.*
  • When articles are posted to the website, at the authors discretion, they also appear on other pages so the articles still exist on these other pages.

Like the main page, articles on these other pages also appear at the top and move down the page as new articles are posted, but unlike the main page these articles never disappear unless the author specifically removes them.

How to view these other pages:

  1. Whenever viewing an article look for the subject ‘Label’ and click it to go to the page with all articles containing that subject Label. [For example on this article the ‘Label’ is at the top of the article and is: ‘About This Page’]
  2. Look in the Sidebar for an item/section titled 'Table Of Contents’ and you will see a listing of articles by subject or ‘Labels’.
  3. You can also isolate an article by itself by clicking on the title of the article.  This handy if you want to print an article out. When printing this way be sure to use ‘Print Preview’ and designate how many pages to print. This is important because printing all pages could result in 10 to 20 pages because the sidebars may extend past the actual article length.
  4. You can also isolate articles by the month or year they were posted by using the ‘LF.N Archives’ section in the sidebar. Above all else experiment. Click on the pictures in the ‘Picture Gallery’ or the links in the ‘LF.N Video Library’. You can always return to the Front Page by clicking on the banner at the top of every page.

We want this site to be interactive.  To this end it is set-up so that different branches of this family can have there own 'page' to exchange information, past, current, and future:

Look in the side bar for an item/section titled 'Table of Contents’ and the ‘Family Pages’ section and click on the subject "Page 3b: Redford 'Red' Littrell" Notice that you are now taken to another page very similar to the main page you were just on:  portions of the page remains unchanged from the main page; the header, sidebar and the items above and below the blue background articles/post, but the Articles/Post section [the light blue background] is different.  It now contains only Article/Post that are relevant to the Redford Littrell Family.*  It doesn't just contain a certain number of articles but also contains older articles that have disappeared from the main page.  This is the 'Redford Littrell Family' page.  By one or more members of your family branch participating your branch can have its own page too.

We hope you enjoy this website and we encourage you to tell your family about it.  Please leave comments and email us to be on our mailing list.

If you or someone in your family would like to contribute information, pictures, or articles please consider becoming a contributor to the site by mailing me your information, pictures etc. So email me if your interested and encourage your family members to do the same.

This website [actually its a blog, but we will refer to it as both a blog and a website] is made up of several ‘pages’ and each page contains several components, or elements:

  • A Header: The area at the top of the page containing the logo/banner stretching across the width of the page body.
  • The Side Bar: The narrow column on the side of the page.  On some website/blogs it may be on either side, or there may be more than one sidebar and they could be on one side, both sides or below the Main Body.
  • The Footer: The area at the bottom of the page which, like the Header, stretches across the width of the page body. Some blogs may not have a Footer.
  • The Main Body: The main body is the wide column. It contains many elements including the ‘Post’ or articles.
  • The Post: Post comes from the colonial and old England phrase ‘to post a letter’ which is the predecessor of the more modern phrase ‘to send a letter.’  This is where the title ‘Post Office’ comes from.  On this website the post are distinguished from the rest of the Main Body by their light blue background or frame like what you are reading now.  For simplicity sake the Post will more often than not be referred to as Articles or Post/Articles.

On this website [and all blogs] the Header, Footer and Sidebar will appear the same on all pages.  This is why when you go from one page to the next they may look the same at first glance.

Parts of the Main Body, with the exception of the ‘Post’ also remain the same.  The Header, Sidebar, Footer and Main Body are all controlled and edited by the Website Editor, Glenn Littrell [AKA GlennDL].  The Post, however is what changes from page to page.

*This is accomplished by the author of the article using Subject Labels when they post their articles.  Notice that at the top or bottom of every article their appears “Label:” followed by one or more items separated by commas.  These are labels the author chose to attach to the article so that it will appear on a certain page at this website.  This article has the label of “About This Site”, but some articles will have more than one label since they may be relevant to more than one subject.  For example The Redford articles will also have the “Missouri Littrells” label because Redford was a descendant of that Family line.  In other words any article can appear on several pages on the website.  Additionally all articles originally appear on the main page until they are replaced by newer articles as described above.
