UPDATE July 17, 2013:
UPDATE May 30, 2013:
Update from Cannan's Kidney Krew:
"We did not get the kidney as it went to the first person on the list! I am very happy for them! Please pray for that individual that they have a speedy recovery and the kidney is not rejected! So happy there are people out there who give life to others when they are called home! Cannan will get dialysis today and tomorrow and then we are busting outta this place! Home for the weekend and return on Monday for outpatient dialysis! Thanks for the thoughts and prayers! Much love to all our "Krew" " Amy Littrell Pytlinski May 30, 2013 at 2:13 PM
Update May 30, 2013: Cannan has been getting increasingly tired and symptomatic over the past few weeks. We had labs done last Friday and his renal function is getting worse... like really bad. We decided at that point it was time to restart dialysis! We were admitted last night for pre-op testing and he had surgery today to get his dialysis access placed and dialysis will start tomorrow. He will have outpatient dialysis every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until transplant....... so when is that?? Well, here goes the whirlwind! As you all know, I (Amy) cannot donate because I have to many arteries going to my kidneys (very weird and not common).. so Todd was worked up to be the donor! Guess what... he is weird too.... he has more arteries than normal as well! GooGoo (Amy's mom) was next on the list... she can't donate because she has 62 year old kidneys and they want a young lively organ for our young lively little boy! The doctors reviewed Todd's testing and decided last night they would take his left kidney after all! All the while, Cannan is on the transplant waiting list! So this morning we wake up and get the news that there is a kidney available and we are 3rd on the list to get it! They will do testing on the 2 patients ahead of us and if they can't get the organ we can take it! YAY!! Is your head spinning yet cause mine sure as hell has been when I found all this out in a matter of 12 hours!
So here's the plan:
What can you do?
Sorry for the long update and I'll try to do my best to keep everyone updated more frequently! Until then.. thanks for the thoughts and prayers! Cannan is resting peacefully... me not so much! Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings!
Much love,
Amy
Please pray for my nephew, Cannon, & family! They're going through a lot right now!

“Cannan, at the young age of 3, got e. coli poisoning which ultimately led to permanent kidney failure. We spent over 5 weeks at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center at which time we started hemodialysis. While we are blessed in more ways than imaginable, Cannan's kidneys are not rebounding as we had hoped for.... we heard those very scary words; "He needs a kidney transplant." We are adjusting to our new life (Cannan is such a trooper) of a restricted diet, tons of medicine, and preparations for a transplant, however if we can make a small difference in the lives of both children and adults living with this horrible disease we are going to try!! “

March 19 Facebook Post: Two full days of evaluation done!! Cannan did absolutely great and melted the hearts of all the medical staff he came in contact with! Hopefully in the next few weeks I (Amy) will get my donor evaluation completed and we can schedule the surgery! Ready to put this behind us! Hope to get the transplant completed sooner rather than later so Cannan can start Kindergarten in August... he is so excited for school! And props to Todd who is going to have to be Cannan's caretaker after the surgery since I will be down and out myself! I know he will do absolutely great... I just have to relinquish control which is not easy for me! :)
April 7 Facebook Post/Event: Fred would appreciate everyone who will be attending the Family reunion in October this year to order a t-shirt on Cannan's kidney transplant. He suggested that we get a t-shirt to wear at the reunion to show Cannan our support. All the info to order one is in the family newsletter. I'm sure Cannan would be happily surprised.
April 7 Facebook Post: Read about this on Mary Catherine Littrell-Cook's FB page (I am Onene Curtis' granddaughter). Let me know where to send the check and I will order a T-shirt and pay for postage, but it will need to be mailed to me in Colorado. Thanks.
Cannan's Kidney Krew: BTW-- I LOVED Aunt Onene and Uncle Bert!
Sandra Savat-Mann: …Pa's been gone a long time but I sure would like to sit down at Ma's table and hear her say, "It probably ain't fittin' to eat". LOL, her dinners were always awesome!
Cannan's Kidney Krew: Ha! So true... I can hear Aunt Onene saying that like it was yesterday! Really miss all the family get togethers with my Grandpa Red and his siblings...
Sandra Savat-Mann: I miss them, too. They were so much closer than we seem to be these days. I can still remember Ma and Aunt Bertha bickering while making dressing and dumplings (Aunt Bertha made the best dumplings!).
April 18 Facebook Post: Rough day today... I (Amy) went for the final phase of my donor evaluation.... Found out that due to the anatomy of my kidneys and arteries I cannot donate. This news hit me like a ton of bricks... I would do anything to have Cannan feel better and it is heartbreaking to know that I can't. Please pray for us as Todd begins the evaluation process... We absolutely need him to get donor clearance! Cannan needs this!!
April 22 Facebook Post: Troy and I will be attending the Kidney Walk in St. Louis this Saturday. We will be arriving Friday and staying at the Econo Lodge (MO312), 4576 Woodson Rd. , Saint Louis, MO, US, 63134
Join the team, support little Cannan and lets get together.
April 27 via mobile: Kidney walk party has started! My boys and I are jammin to some music on this fine rainy morning! Cannan's Krew is ready to combat kidney disease! Now... The rain can stop anytime!
April 27 Facebook Post: Fun times this morning, despite the rain! Thanks to all for supporting us and to those that braved the weather today:)
April 30 Facebook Post: I hope you all can help me congratulate Amy for all her hard work she did in once again organizing the Kidney Walk for us and especially Cannan. Because of her we were able to raise a significantly larger amount than last year to help fight this disease. Thanks for your hard work Amy!
April 30 Facebook Post : Thank you for the recognition... Much appreciated but not necessary.... The true person who deserves recognition is Cannan! That little guy wakes up everyday and battles this awful disease... But you would never know, because in typical Cannan fashion, he puts a smile on his face and pushes forward through any obstacle thrown at him! I would be ecstatic if I had half his strength, determination and zest for life! I am so lucky to be his mommy.... He is my hero!

I will be walking in the March for Babies on Saturday, April 30th which helps raise money for the March of Dimes! This event helps raise money to ensure that all babies are born full term instead of prematurely. Many of you know that Erica was born 5 weeks prematurely, which doesn't seem like a lot, but premature infants may face many challenges throughout life if they're born too soon.

From the NICUPS website: “The NICUPs™™ (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit Parents) are a group of dedicated volunteers who work hard to make the NICU experience an easier one for families. Each of the parent volunteers were once in the St. John's Mercy Medical Center NICU with children of their own. Their personal experience enables them to offer vital emotional support to current NICU families. Support begins as early as mid-pregnancy for mothers on bed rest, continues through their time in the NICU, and is on-going until the family feels support is no longer needed.”
Hello everyone, |
Hi Everyone!
Erica went to the cardiologist yesterday for her 6 month check up and all was well! CELEBRATE GOOD TIMES... It's been 18 months since her last surgery, so Jason and I felt kind of like we were on borrowed time because it's usually about every 12 months that she's had a surgery. Our minds were obviously playing with us, too, because we kept thinking that she may be showing symptoms of heart trouble (dusky blue color around the mouth, etc.). He increased her diuretic a little, because she responds to that well and felt that her weight gain was adequate although she's at the top of the growth curve. We're working on maintaining healthy eating habits and making healthy food choices so that she doesn't gain too much weight. He also said that at her age kids actually listen to their bodies, so if she couldn't keep up with her peers she'd stop. That makes it pretty easy to see if she's tiring out too much or whatever. He felt that she could go another 6 months before seeing him again, too! What a relief!
Other than that, we're on spring break this week and have tons of fun planned--dentist appt., moving my classroom to the other end of the school, etc. Did you really think we'd be going somewhere for vacation?
We'll keep you posted...
Love,
Amanda
Hi All!
Nothing significant going on with Jason and I--normal keeping our heads above water with work and daily life. I have completed my educ. administration internship and now have 2 classes to finish by Dec. then I'll have my education administration Master's degree. Jason is, of course, selling trucks as if the economy has never changed. I know he works a TON harder to just sell at the same pace, but he still manages to make it work somehow!
Erica has a cardiologist appt. on Thursday, Oct. 16th so we'll probably send another update sometime next week.
She has completely changed and grown up since starting pre-school in August. She now can say the Pledge of Allegiance all by herself, sing her ABCs, write and recognize the letter E for Erica, plays school, "reads" the pictures in books to Jason and I, sings songs and best of all: she's completely aware of various letters and what they stand for! For example, when reading her alphabet books she notices the S and says this is for Nana's name (Susan), J is for Daddy's name, A is for Aunt Amy & mommy's name, F is for GooGoo and Papa's name (Faye & Fred), and even notices that the F is right by her name (E). How awesome is that? (although I'm her mom and a reading teacher, so I'm a little partial to those accomplishments, of course)
One thing Erica has struggled with a bit all along is her speech. She does talk our ears off, but the articulation of certain sounds has stumped her so she should begin speech testing and then get an IEP which will allow her to get speech services through the school district. Since being around other kids her age, we've already noticed improvements in her speech though.
One exciting thing this summer was when I nominated Erica for a Do The Right Thing Award. It's an award given by a local news channel and the city police department. It recognizes kids who do the right thing. Erica didn't get the award, but she did get a certificate and tee shirt. This is the story in a nutshell:
Jason was changing the oil in his car and cut/punctured both of his index fingers. When he said "ouch" and Erica saw the blood, she ran inside through the house to get 2 Band-Aid for him. She brought them back outside to the garage and put them both on his fingers. Doesn't sound like a big deal, but if you know Erica, you know that she's petrified of Band-Aid because of the adhesive and how hard it pulls to take them off. This, I'm sure, is because of all the surgeries, tape, and Band-Aid she's been exposed to. I think it was awesome that she put aside her fears to help her daddy.
Once again, I'm her mom and a little biased, but isn't that part of parenting?
Sorry for the proclomation length, but that's our news.
Love,
Amanda (Jason and Erica, too)
