Harbert H. Ezell: Union Army

Kizzie’s maternal grandfather, Harbert Ezell,
served in the Union Army during the Civil War.

Born in 1820 we have three sources for the service of Harbert H. Ezell, his tombstone, family stories and the published recollections of Robert Ezell.

Family history, passed down by the descendants of Robert Ezell, tells of 4 brothers serving on opposite sides during the Civil War.

“Hobart (Harb), Lem, and Will fought in the Civil War on the Union side, Robert fought on the southern or Confederate side(CSA). During the Battle of Chickamauga, Harb, Lem, and Will had jobs loading the rifles for the Union Army. When they realized that Robert’s unit was facing them on the battlefield they refused to load rifles”

This account is flawed in that the 4 were not all brothers and Lem may not have actually been with William and Hobart at Chickamauga. Lem was either a brother or cousin of Robert and William, who were brothers. Hobart was an uncle of Robert and William and probably Lem. Lem had originally enlisted in the CSA before either deserting or being captured by Union Forces. After serving as a POW he enlisted in the Union Army and finished the war at Ft. Riley, Kansas.

It is not unusual for family stories that are handed down for generations to change as the telling becomes subject to failed memories or convenience. It is not hard to envision an uncle, a cousin and two brothers becoming and uncle and three brothers and then just four brothers.

Our Ancestral Movements: From Virginia to Missouri

While we have been developing the story of the family’s Missouri migration from Lawrence County, Tennessee to the bootheel region of Missouri  we have seen more information falling in place on earlier migration stories:

• We know our Littrell cousin’s we’re at the founding of Boonesborough and the blazing of the Wilderness Road with Daniel Boone. They came through the Cumberland Gap as some of the first settlers in Kentucky.
• We know that our Littrell ancestor and his cousins migrated to Kentucky, and then to Tennessee, eventually settling in the same areas as other families that were their neighbors in Virginia.
• We know that our Littrell ancestor and his neighbors and cousins also came through the Cumberland Gap and were among the first settlers to the area around the, then nonexistent, community of Dunnville, Kentucky.
• We know that some of our Ezell Cousins, traveling with the Bumpass Party from Union County, South Carolina would be amongst the first settlers in the area of Giles County. An area that would eventually grow to be the town of Pulaski, the county seat of the newly expanded Giles County, Tennessee. Possibly also coming through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky then Nashville, Tennessee.
• We know that our Littrell ancestor from Dunnville, Kentucky and some of his cousins and neighbors would be amongst the first settlers in the newly formed county of Lawrence. Settling just miles from the Giles County, Tennessee settlers. Some of these settlers would be from the same families that migrated with our Littrell ancestor into Kentucky.
• We know that our Ezell ancestor, along with our Belew and Comer ancestors and some of their other Union County, South Carolina neighbors would move into the same area as our Littrell ancestor in Lawrence County, Tennessee just miles from their Ezell cousins and uncles in Giles County, Tennessee.
• We know that the same descendants of those Littrell, Comer, Belew, and Ezell families, and their neighbors would once again migrate into the same neighborhoods in another state. This time into the bootheel area of Missouri (see also) during the Great Depression leaving over a hundred years after their ancestors settled Tennessee. (see more)

These Virginia and South Carolina neighbors lived within miles of each other in their original neighborhoods and then in their new neighborhoods in Kentucky and Tennessee they once again were neighbors, and again in Missouri. In some cases they belonged to the same churches as each other in their state of origin and state of destination. They inter married with the same neighbors in both states and left families in their old neighborhoods with each migration. We can identify some moves as a group and some that were individual families moving over short periods of time.

Unknown Ezells:

     This Comer Family bears the same surname as Daniel P. Comer, fatherr of Kizzie Zore Comer, who is the wife of John Daniel Littrell.

     In researching Kizzie’s ancestors and their descendants we came across individuals and families, which, by their surname, location and dates are probably related to Kizzie. Until that relationship/connection is made we list them as unknown relatives.  

     When they are connected we will show them in The Ezell Family line and change their surname from all caps to “Ezells”.

This Landtroop family (article right) bears the same surname as Mary Catherine Urban’s mother, Susannah L. E. Landtroop wife of Cassandra Urban.

     In researching Mary Catherine's ancestors and their descendants we came across this family, which, by their surname, location and dates are probably related to Mary Catherine. Until that relationship/connection is made we list them as unknown relatives.  

     When they are connected we will show them in the Urban family line and change their surname from all caps to “Landtroop”.

Until a recent visit to the St. Louis County Library we had no more information for this small family that is contained in this newspaper article.

From resources at that library we were able to identify the Landtroop’s in the article, as well as clear up some other ‘mysteries’.

We still have not connected the William EZELL mentioned, and have not identified any children (not mentioned) of Mai & William.

Below is the above information, corrected and updated to our files. With the exception of Viola Johns and John Henry Simbeck we do not list the 3rd generations.

The new information on the Landtroops also clears up some questions about Viola Johns and John Henry Simbeck, which will be covered in another post.

The only memory I have of Kizzie’s mother is when she was lying on her death bed at John & Kizzie’s homestead in East Prairies, Mo. All the kids were sent outside, we were playing on that old tree that had the giant knotted roots that you could  set on or walk on all the way around the tree. Even then we were to noisy (her window was on that trees aide of the house) so were were chastised again for being noisy.
After she died her body was transported back to Lawrence County, TN.     GlennDL

One of Lawrence's Oldest Ladies Dies: Second Oldest Citizen In Second Civil District

Mrs. Ollie Ezell Comer, second oldest citizen of the Second District of Lawrence County, died Monday night at the home of her daughter Mrs. John Littrell, East Prairie, Missouri. The body was brought to the home of her son Jesse Comer, at Loretto, and funeral services were to be held this [Thursday] afternoon at 1:00 o'clock Liberty Grove Church with the Rev. Henry Yeager officiating, and burial in Bishop Chapel Cemetery with the Osbo [rn] Funeral Home of Loretto having charge of the arrangements.

--Mrs. Comer was born January 26, 1863, in this county; she was the daughter of the late Harb and Sinthia Potete Ezell, and granddaughter of William and Jimima Potete, pioneer citizens of Lawrence County. The Potetes helped organize Second Creek church on June 26, 1830, and also played an important role in the first county government during and following David Crockett's life.

Mrs. Comer united with Missionary Baptist Church in early life. She was married to Daniel Patrick Comer in 1883 and to this union eight children were born, one of whom, Mrs. Virgie Marks is deceased. She also had 5 step children, Mrs. Ettie Johnson, Mrs. Dellie Murrell, Miss Laura Comer, Johnny and Taylor Comer all of whom are deceased. She is survived by seven children Mrs. Bertha Taylor, of the Liberty Grove Community; Mrs. John Littrell, of Missouri; Leslie Comer, of East Prairie, Missouri; Crutcher Comer, of Russellvile, Alabama; Jesse Comer, of Loretto; Bob Comer, of this city;, and Albert Comer, of Indiana. She is also survived by 57 grandchildren, 116 great-grandchildren, and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

To the Editor:

I would like to be a member of your over 80-club.I was born near Loretto, the daughter of H.M. and Martha (Ezell) Brown July 4, 1901.

I went to school at Pebble Hill School, which is gone now. My first teacher was Miss Anna Wisdom from Lawrenceburg.I entered third grade when I started school until the Pebble Hill school was built there was no school near enough to attend. My mother taught my sister and I at home. At first there was only three months school term and than later five months. We lived five miles away from the school and we walked it each day to and from school. There was no school buses in those days.

In 1919, I married Edward Littrell and we had nine children, six boys and three girls. We lived in and near Loretto until 1929 we moved to South East Mo. My father and mother came to Mo. in 1930. Within the next few years, both my father and mother died, also a sister and my oldest brother. In 1940 my husband died and in 1941 a son.

The children and I moved back to Tennessee in December of 1941 we bought a small farm near Liberty Grove.

In 1946, I married K.G. Campbell. He died July 2 in 1960. By then, all my children were married and I went back to MO. for a few months, a very unhappy few months and I came back to Tennessee. the most beautiful state in the world. I have a trailer and I live alone in Loretto. I do my housework, work in the garden and flowers and I am content.

There has been many changes in these 80 years. Some people say the good old days, but I, for one, don't think some of them were so good.

I have read the D-U for many years and for several years was a D-U correspondent for Loretto Route 4. The D-U is the best county newspaper in the South.

Excerpts from The Families of Timmons Seburn & Mary Catherine Urban Literal: Appendix 11: Ezell/Comer

The spouses of James Carroll Littrell and John Daniel Littrell were 1st cousins to each other, establishing a dual relationship with each other for their descendants. James Littrell’s wife Donie Ezell and John Littrell’s wife Kizzie Comer were 9th generation descendants of Timothy Ezell (d.1696) of Surrey County, Virginia.

Between 1750 and 1830 the great great grandchild of Timothy, William Ezell (and Susannah Seat) relocated from Surrey County to Union County, South Carolina. Several of their children would migrate to the south-central Tennessee area.

Hobart H. Ezell, the grandson of William & Susannah, was the grandfather of both Donie and Kizzie.

There are at least three branches of the Littrell family that are also descendants of the Ezell family. Two of them descend from the sons of Timmons Seburn Literal: James Carroll and John Daniel; and the other from George Literal's [the brother of Timmons] son Edward Littrell, Sr.
